Videos and Web-Based Tools

The Health of the States Interactive Website - The Health of the States project started in 2016 as a detailed analysis of state ranking on 29 different health outcomes and their correlation with 123 social determinants of health. In 2021, the Center launched a web-based, interactive version of the report.

Deeply Rooted: History’s Lessons for Equity in Northern Virginia – The online version of a report produced by the Center for the Northern Virginia Health Foundation. The report, also found on the website, explores Northern Virginia’s 400 years of Black history and how the area's history with racism has created deep racial inequities. The website digs deeper into the stories that are mentioned in the report while also featuring audio, video, and other interactive graphic elements.

HOPE Initiative Website – The Health Opportunity and Equity (HOPE) Initiative launched in 2018 to start a new conversation about health, one that embraces the idea that every person in the U.S. deserves the best possible health outcome regardless of race, ethnicity, income, or ZIP code.

Maps and Graphics

Life Expectancy in Northern Virginia Maps  – Using the Healthy Places Index the Center produced a series of county-specific snapshots, and an interactive map highlighting differences in life expectancy, income, educational attainment, and racial composition of neighborhoods in Arlington County, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Prince William County, and the cities they surround. Click here to read the report and explore the map.

Mapping Life Expectancy – The Center produced a series of life expectancy maps to illustrate that opportunities to lead a long and healthy life can vary dramatically by neighborhood. In some cases, life expectancy can differ by as much as 20 years in neighborhoods only five miles apart from one another. Click here to explore the maps.

Self-Care Booklet - For the Healthy Communities for Youth project, a community-based intervention that focuses on youth violence prevention and education, the Center produced a booklet (see below) with instructions and interactive activities such as poetry writing, breathing exercises, and gratitude lists. The HCFY intervention team handed out the booklet to families in the Richmond area.

Issue Briefs

Healthy Equity Report – In partnership with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, the Center published “Health Equity: How Opportunities for Health and Shaped by Race and Ethnicity” to help normalize the conversation on why equity matters and the importance of addressing conditions that restrict opportunities for good health and economic mobility.

Behavioral Health Index – In partnership with the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services funded the Center to produce an index that estimates the need for behavioral health services in local populations served by the state’s 40 Community Service Board (CSB) districts. To achieve this, the Center developed the Behavioral Health Index (BHI) from a statistical model that predicted the number of mentally unhealthy days among adults based on local indicators. The higher the score, the fewer mentally unhealthy days.

Employment Barriers in the East End of Richmond – The Center completed a series of interviews with residents of the East End of Richmond to better understand both barriers to and facilitators of employment there. Common barriers cited included limited access to transportation, childcare, and phone and internet services; residents' lack of computer skills, educational credentials, or job experience; and limitations due to background checks, stress, and feeling unsafe. Residents shared that increased availability of jobs, help with transportation and availability of jobs on a bus line, and employers providing training for people without prior experience would be important facilitators of increased employment in the area.
